By Robert Arthur, IACP President
Hi everyone,
We’ve had another exciting month of growth at IACP! One of the great pleasures of being President is seeing our team—staff, board, and volunteer committee members from around the world—strengthen our organization every day through creativity, determination, and deep competence. It’s truly inspiring, and I wish all our members could see it up close.
We have a fantastic opportunity for all members coming up: the IACP Town Hall on Thursday, July 17 (North America) / Friday, July 18 (Australasia). I will be speaking and answering questions about our Mission and Strategic Plan, and we will announce the recipients of the 2025 Heart of Service Award. It’s a great chance to connect and hear how IACP is advancing the Collaborative Practice community.
As I continue through my Presidential year, I am dedicating part of each letter to the Ten Pillars of Collaborative Practice. Last month, I offered an overview. This month, let’s explore the first Pillar: Empowerment. Each of the Ten Pillars is a value statement—not listed in order of importance. The first four describe values we express through our work.
Here’s the full statement:
Through Collaborative Practice, we help people in conflict make informed decisions that meet their needs and goals.
It’s a rich concept, hard to summarize in one word. I chose Empowerment. What word would you choose? Conflict can leave people feeling out of control, defensive, and diminished. In Collaborative Practice, we bring information, answer questions, offer coaching, and create a space where clients can make meaningful choices. We return power to their voices. We put them at the center.
Next month, I will continue on to the second Pillar, Holistic Support.
