Interest Based Conflict Resolution: An Interdisciplinary Collaborative Practice Workshop

OVERVIEW
 
There is probably no concept in Alternative Dispute Resolution which is more frequently aspired to but actually less effectively utilized than working with interests.  This workshop focuses on how to identify and frame interests as a foundation for creating multiple options and ultimately testing the options in the service of finding an agreement uniquely suited to the parties.  There is a lot of confusion in the minds of many practitioners and vagueness in explaining to parties the concept of interests and their function in the negotiation process.  In this program, we will focus on how to interactively explain interests in a way that the parties will understand and be able to actively participate in exploring what is important to them to identify and then capture their priorities in short phrases.  Also included is the iterative relationship between interests and options to provide direction for the later stages of negotiation, including how to make the interests useful to the parties at impasse and even the final negotiation of distributive issues.  The workshop will include mini lectures, role playing and group discussion in an interactive and dynamic manner. 
 
Learning objectives:
 
1.  Participants will understand how to effectively describe interests to parties in an interactive way.

2.  Participants will learn how to explore with parties what is important to them.
 
3.  Participates will learn how to translate what is important to parties to useful phrases of their interests.
 
4.  Participants will learn how to utilize interests in option development and evaluation and in negotiations.
