IACP believes strongly in the importance of accessible Collaborative Practice programs, particularly for low income or modest means clients.  Collaborative professionals around the globe are working to make Collaborative Practice accessible to more people through pro bono, low bono, streamlined and flat fee projects.  Please join us and members of the Access to Collaboration Committee to discuss how Access to Collaborative = Access to Justice.

Presenters:  Elizabeth (Liza) Thayer - Committee Co-Chair, Giulia Chiara Gelsomino, Elizabeth Vaz, Deborah Gilman, Jo-Anne Fiore, Elisabetta (Lisa) Valentini, Robert Arthur.

Elizabeth Thayer  - Dr. Thayer received her BA from Goucher College in 1973, her Ed.M. from Harvard University in 1974, and her Ph.D. from the University of Rhode Island in 1978. She completed post-doctoral training at the Devereux Foundation, Devon, PA. 1978-1980. Dr. Elizabeth S. Thayer is a licensed psychologist at Beacon Behavioral Services LLC, in West Hartford, Ct. She is a past co-president of the Collaborative Divorce Group of Connecticut, a Co-Chair of the International Academy of Divorce Professionals (IACP) Trainers Committee, and Co-chair of the Access to Collaborative Committee of IACP. She is a trainer in the Connecticut Collaborative Training Group. She is co-founder of the PEACE Program, a parent counseling program for parents of divorce and the co-author of two publications: The Co-Parenting Survival Guide and Adult Children of Divorce.

Giulia Chiara Gelsomino -  Giulia Chiara Gelsomino is an italian family law attorney, member of the Milan Bar Association, working in both litigation and alternative dispute resolution, in Italian, English and Spanish.  Giulia was born in 1987 and, after graduating at Bocconi University of Milan, she obtained a specialization diploma in Legal Professions at the Universities of Pavia and Bocconi and a further specialization in Family Law (within italian AIAF Association).  Trained Collaborative professional since 2016, today she is a IACP and AIADC (Associazione Italiana Professionisti Collaborativi) member. In IACP she is a “Access to Collaborative Practice” Committee Member and, in AIADC, she works as Social Media and Communication manager.

Elizabeth Vaz - Elizabeth Vaz is a mediator and Collaborative attorney based on Long Island (Hauppauge, NY). From the time she took her first family law class at Hofstra University School of Law, Liz knew that family law was her calling. And when she first took a Collaborative training in 2008, she knew this was the way of the future for divorcing couples. Liz is the founder and principal attorney of Vaz Law, PLLC, she is the founder and President of the Long Island Collaborative Divorce Professionals, Inc. and she’s an active member of the International Academy of Collaborative Professionals (IACP). Having seen her own parent’s marriage end with such tragic results, she knew that her destiny was finding a better technique for Long Island families. Liz uses her Bachelor’s degree in psychology and her law degree to educate people about their options and she is determined to change the way people get divorced. She currently serves as the East End Director of Moxxie, a women’s business community whose non-profit arm provides mentorship and leadership skills for young women, she is the President of the National Organization for Women, Mid-Suffolk Chapter, she is a legal educator for the non-profit, Family Kind and she continues to work with developmentally disabled women who are gaining independence, through a local non-profit.

Deborah Gilman - Dr. Deborah Gilman is a Pennsylvania Licensed Psychologist and owner/founder of Fox Chapel Premier Psychological Services, a boutique private psychological practice in Fox Chapel, PA. Dr. Gilman is a native of Pittsburgh. She obtained her Bachelor of Science degree at Carnegie Mellon University, graduating with honors. She then pursued her passion for clinical psychology at Tulane University in New Orleans, LA where she obtained her Master of Science (M.S.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) with a specialization in pediatric psychology. Dr. Gilman completed a prestigious residency at Johns Hopkins Medical School/The Kennedy Krieger Institute followed by a three-year fellowship at Nationwide Children’s Hospital/Ohio State University where she specialized in interventions to ameliorate the effects of child and family trauma. As a certified trauma professional, Dr. Gilman has seen the devastating emotional impact high conflict litigated divorce can have on families, which prompted her to look for processes that promote an amicable and healing environment for families going through divorce. Dr. Gilman is a trained Mediator in PA and trained Coach/Child Specialist in Collaborative Law. On the collaborative team, she serves as a neutral mental health coach and neutral child specialist. She is an active member of the International Academy of Collaborative Professionals (IACP), she is the President of the Collaborative Law Association of Southwestern Pennsylvania (CLASP), participates in the local mediation council in Pittsburgh, PA, and is active as a speaker and presenter nationally and internationally. Dr. Gilman is passionate about keeping families out of court and supporting each family’s unique needs during the divorce process and beyond.

Jo-Anne Fiore - Jo-Anne Fiore is a Certified Financial Divorce Specialist and fully accredited Financial Family Mediator and trained Collaborative Professional. She is the owner of Smart Split Divorce Solutions, a company started by her over 10 years ago after a 26-year career with a major financial institution and having witnessed first-hand the financial devastation of many divorcing clients. Jo-Anne has a degree in Economics from York University along with being a Certified Financial Planner and Registered Retirement Consultant. She brings all her financial expertise together in her efforts to help clients make sound financial decisions as they move forward in their lives. She was also part of the development team in Simcoe County who helped spearhead the flat fee Collaborative Model for families. She is the co-chair of the Peel Halton Collaborative Group as well as co-founder of the Separation Professionals Alliance (SPA) a group of Certified Financial Divorce Specialists committed to furthering personal growth in the field of family financial issues in Separation. She is highly committed to assisting families going through transition to not only preserve family wealth but preserve family relationships in the long run.

Elisabetta (Lisa) Valentini - Dott. Elisabetta Valentini graduated with honours at the University Alma Mater Studiorum of Bologna in 1988. She lives in Trento where since 1990 she runs her now very well established boutique law firm dealing all facets of civil practice and litigation. After over 30 years of judiciary experience, where she has gained an outstanding reputation as a dedicated and competent litigator, she is now in the process of shifting entirely to collaborative law and alternative dispute resolution mainly in family law matters in order to provide the greatest value and long-term benefits to clients. She has attended intermediate, interdisciplinary, and advanced trainings in Collaborative Law and mediation both in Italy and in the United States. She speaks fluent English and is able to deal with bilingual matters (English and Italian) in order to make non-Italian speaking clients feel at ease with the process. Elisabetta is very active in the local law community where in 2014 she was nominated the first woman President of the BAR exams for the Trento Court of Appeal and has been a member of the Governing Council of the Civil Chambers of Trento. She also loves teaching and dedicates some of her time to giving lectures at the Post Graduate Legal Training School. Since 2016 she is a member of IACP and AIADC and has attended many seminars and WS and held WS at the IACP Forum of Chicago and Seattle. In 2016 she founded the Collaborative Law Practice Group of Trentino Aldo Adige of which she is still the leader.

Robert Arthur - Robert McMillan Arthur is a collaborative attorney and mediator practicing in the Metro Milwaukee area and the Fox Valley in Wisconsin. Robert’s family law practice is centered around Collaborative Family Law, using his experience and training to empower and inform clients, advocate for their interests, and guide them in difficult problem solving. He is a former Chair and current board member of the Wisconsin practice group, the Collaborative Family Law Council of Wisconsin. He is also a board member of the Collaborative Foundation of Wisconsin, which operates an access to Collaborative program.
