Mary S Pence, JD
(Lawyer)
In my practice, I help clients navigate the difficult transitions of separation and divorce in a future-oriented fashion. I have found that my clients are more satisfied and achieve better outcomes both for themselves and for their children when they select the Collaborative process. I seek to assist each client in creating a respectful, efficient process which helps them achieve their unique goals.
I am involved in Collaborative work at the local, regional and national levels.
Locally, I was a founder and am a current Board member of the D.C. Academy of Collaborative Professionals ('DCACP') and am a current member of a Maryland practice group as well -- Collaborative Dispute Resolution Professionals ('CDRP').
I was also a founder and am a current Board member of the Maryland organization for all Collaborative practitioners throughout the state -- the Maryland Collaborative Practice Council ('MCPC'). I am also one of the originators and am the current chairperson of the Tri-State Education Task Force, which seeks to raise the profile and awareness of Collaborative Practice throughout the D.C. Metropolitan area.
Nationally, I am active in the IACP, serving as the Chair of the Local Host Committee for the 2010 IACP Forum which will be held in Washington, D.C. in October of 2010. I also serve as the chair of the Uniform Collaborative Law Act ('UCLA') subcommittee developing a screening tool and 'Best Practices' for Collaborative cases in which domestic violence is an issue.
I am the Chairperson of the Collaborative Law Committee of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers ('AAML'), a national organization of the preeminent family law attorneys from across the United States.
My committment to Collaborative Practice is balanced by my excellence as a Family Law practitioner. I have been recognized as one of the Washington, D.C. area's top matrimonial attorneys by Washingtonian Magazine in October 1995, March 2000, February 2004, December, 2007, and December, 2009, and was named as one of the area's 'Super Lawyers' in 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010.

| General Comments |
| I have been honored to serve as an Observer to the work of the Drafting Committee for a Uniform Collaborative Law Act ('UCLA'). The UCLA was passed unanimously by the National Laws Commission ('NLC') in the summer of 2009 and now is in the process of being introduced and passed in the various states around the country. The UCLA creates uniformity in the practice of Collaborative Law across state lines, creates a privilege for communications within the Collaborative Law process, and addresses the issues of 'coercive control and violence' in Collaborative cases. |
