Betty A Spencer, Juris Doctor; Marriage Family Therapist (Lawyer)

I have been practicing family law for more than eighteen years. I also hold a California License as a Marriage, Family Therapist (M.F.T.). I have been training in the area of collaborative practice since 1998. I particularly enjoy working as a collaborative practice lawyer because the process is positive. Lawyers act as guardians of the process. We help participants learn to negotiate in an atmosphere of mutual respect, to communicate better and to develop parenting plans that work for their children. Lawyers work in combination with various financial specialists to assist you in complex property divisions, appraising your business or your home, refinancing loans and credit card debt as well as other issues related to our current economic crisis. We also help you protect important relationships as well as the relationship both you and your spouse have with your children. The agreements worked out in this process focus on the needs and interests of each member of this family. In matters relating to the children, the children are the primary focus. You will not be expected to sign on to any agreement until both you and your spouse (or partner) are ready to do so. Divorce is an ending and a new beginning. I particularly enjoy working with people who want to use collaborative practice as a means of creating their particular new beginning.
I am also interested in helping couples who need assistance in deciding whether to stay married or get a divorce or legal separation.
If you decide you would like to explore reconciliation, then your collaborative team will assist you in establishing better communication as well as new boundaries, in having difficult conversations and in working out post nuptial agreement which will restore hope and sanity to your marriage commitment.
