Gloria K Vanderhorst, PhD
(Psychologist/Mental Health Professional)
Personal Statement:
As you go through a legal process such as a divorce, business conflict or estate conflict, you are looking for the best possible outcome. The success of this transition may be dependent on the collaborative process that you choose and the professionals that assist you in this process. Because I will be a vital part of this transition for you, I want you to understand how my 30+ years of experience have shaped my approach.
My work with others has taught me that growth is possible at any age and that a supportive team of experts is the best context to facilitate this growth. The key to resolving conflict is appreciating that relationships are complicated but often ongoing beyond the conflict, thus, requiring respect and cooperative planning for the rest of your life. As your collaborative advocate, I will help you to practice and experience new ways of thinking and being in relationship that will enable you to communicate more effectively, problem solve, and manage emotions constructively.
Professional Experience:
I have been in practice for over 30 years. From 1975 through 2006, I was the president of Vanderhorst & Associates, a multidisciplinary private practice in Baltimore, Maryland, which included psychiatry, psychology, social work, and pastoral counseling, mediation, and educational training and placement. My practice was the first mental health practice in the area to include mediation for separation and divorce as a vital part of the practice. Because of the success of that process for families, I co-founded the Chesapeake Consortium, a professional service that included experts from family law, financial planning, mental health and vocational rehabilitation.
I am skilled in Cognitive Interpersonal Therapy and trained in Family Systems. As a tenured professor at Towson University, I taught courses in child development, and lectured on child development throughout the Mid-Atlantic area. I have testified in numerous cases regarding the best interest of the child and worked cooperatively with parents, lawyers, teachers, coaches and other professionals to support family systems where children can thrive. I have assisted business partners in resolving conflict and helped families after the death of a loved one.
