Marie L Gordon, BA, LLB (Lawyer)

Marie L. Gordon Q.C. is one of the most senior family law practitioners in Edmonton. After years of litigating at all levels of Court in Alberta, she is now restricting her practice to Collaborative Family Law files, with a focus on helping her clients resolve even the most complicated family law issues through settlement and negotiation. Marie has practised family law in Edmonton with this firm since 1983. Her years of experience and her reputation offer clients reassurance that their disputes will be handled effectively and compassionately.
Marie teaches two courses in family law to law students at the University of Alberta as a sessional instructor and was one of four nominees in January 2013 for the “Sessional Teaching Excellence Award” at the Faculty of Law at the University of Alberta.

Since 1998 she has written and presented papers on family law topics on an annual basis to the National Judicial Institute, and is a widely published author and regular speaker to audiences of judges, lawyers and the public. Her areas of writing and publication include parenting, child and spousal support, property division and costs, and most recently her work was cited by the Supreme Court of Canada in its 2011 Kerr v. Baranow decision.

Currently she serves as an associate editor of the Reports of Family Law, and sits on the Editorial Board of the Canadian Family Law Quarterly. She is a co-chair of the National Family Law Programme, and a board member of the Canadian Research Institute on Law and the Family.

In 2006 she was inducted as a Fellow of the International Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers. In 2011 Marie received the University of Alberta’s Alumni Honour Award for her contributions to the community. She is currently the Chair of the Board of Directors of the Edmonton Community Legal Centre which provides legal assistance to low income Edmontonians unable to privately hire lawyers in civil and related matters. Marie has been named in the Canadian “Best Lawyers” directory since 2006 and was named as Edmonton’s “Lawyer of the Year” in Family Law for 2013 by the Best Lawyers website.
