David S Tyson, LCSW
(Mental Health Professional)
I believe in the inherent worth of every individual, the sanctity of personal freedom, and responsibility for choices. I enjoy helping people struggle well and live more fully - learning, recovering and growing. I fulfill these beliefs and interests as a second career Licensed Clinical Social Worker in private coaching and psychotherapy practice in Vienna, Virginia, the District of Columbia and Maryland.
In Collaborative practice, I coach clients as they work through concerns and possibilities encountered in the separation and divorce process. I listen and help you identify and voice your interests and bring your ‘best self’ to this very challenging time in your life. Using the Collaborative team model we provide structure, guidance and support so you can forge a future that you can live with. If you have children, I will guide you toward interim decisions and a co-parenting plan that addresses their needs and welfare. I look forward to answering your questions: Please call. I also highly recommend you read 'Collaborative Divorce -- The Revolutionary New Way to Restructure Your Family, Resolve Legal Issues, and Move on with Your Life' by Pauline H. Tesler, M.A., J.D. and Peggy Thompson, PhD.
In my private practice, I provide personalized, goal-directed and experiential psychotherapy and counseling for individuals, couples, families and groups, tailoring interventions that address each client's unique needs, interests and goals.
Through parent coordination, I help clients with co-parenting concerns, promoting increased awareness and consideration of children's needs, a present and future orientation, and with making decisions.
I also provide executive coaching for professionals, including leadership development, optimal use of personal strengths, change management, team-building, and strategic negotiations.
Background:
During my first career I served as a naval officer, aviator, aviation squadron commander, senior leader and educator. Before retiring as a Captain, USN after 26 years of service, I taught as a Professor of Behavioral Sciences at the Industrial College of the Armed Forces (ICAF), and enjoyed coaching and counseling military and government service senior executives and their families.
After gaining my Master’s in Social Work at National Catholic School of Social Services (NCSSS), I helped those suffering serious mental illness, addiction, and their families in the inpatient psychiatric hospital and outpatient community mental health settings. I work to help clients realize personal freedom, joy and fulfillment in the midst of and through their life circumstances.

| General Comments |
Collaborative Divorce offers a process to attain an efficient, deep and durable solution to divorce; preserve emotional health and relationships; and, for couples with children, the Collaborative Team process promotes a positive co-parenting relationship and considers your children's wellbeing throughout the process. For all couples, it offers the possibility of a more peaceful end to the marriage and fewer burdens as you both move forward to live your individual futures.
I promote Collaborative divorce in the Metro-DC area as a positive alternative to litigation and a more supportive alternative to simple mediation I serve as a member of the Boards of Directors for the Collaborative Professionals of Northern Virginia (CPNV), the Virginia Collaborative Professionals (VaCP) and the District of Columbia Academy of Collaborative Professionals (DCACP); I am a member of the Maryland Collaborative Practice Council and the Metro-DC area’s Collaborative Mental Health Professionals group (CMHP). |
